Community of Honor

I believe that having a community of honor is crucial to higher education.  The honor code is extremely important especially because it creates an environment of fairness for all.  Without it, students may be more tempted to be dishonest in the academic work or other areas, and with it in place, it gives the faculty the power to enforce just punishment on those who try to use unfair advantages. I still think CNU has some room for improvement, because every week a bike is stolen, or once in a while I will hear of how someone cheated on a test.  I believe that it is up to everyone on campus to make sure that the honor code is utilized in all situations including residence life and individual academic endeavors.  Unless everyone strives to make sure that honor is upheld throughout campus at all times, then it will just be an idea.  It should be more than that, an actuality of what is actually going on everyday on this great campus.

The community of honer that CNU is important our higher education. Is the community actually present in all aspects of the university? I would have to say no. I have witnessed everyone from RA’s to administrative workers to senior students break the honor code numerous times. It seems that CNU is more worried about penalizing students than they are faculty that break the rules just the same. Granted the honor code and its penalties prevents alot of dishonest things from happening, it’s not consistent with its punishments and I feel like that is a huge problem that needs to be address. One student gets kicked out completely for drinking in a dorm and his roommate is given 20hours community service and put on probation. Doesn’t seem fair does it? There is a lot of room for improvement for CNU’s Honor Code and Community.

Honor is something very essential in succeeding in higher education. However the idea that a community of honor exists to the extent that CNU claims I believe is not valid. Students are constantly breaking the honor code and the repercussions for serious infractions are often overlooked. The fear of the penalties for breaking the honor code is enough to scare many into following it but until students start seeing that CNU is going to follow through with their honor code it will continue to be a concept and not a backbone at the university. Much needs to change in order for this to truly get off the ground and have CNU become a community of honor.

While CNU’s honor code made not be followed by every Individual student, It is respected by many of the students. It is impossible to expect that the full student body of any school would strictly follow such a code, however the constant reminder of the honor code does have some kind of an impact in the majority of CNU students. At least for me, constantly seeing the honor code on a test or a wall is a gentle reminder of the community we live in, and the integrity we are expected to maintain. As far as Honor and Integrity are concerned, I would say CNU holds its students to a high standard. Honesty is heavily promoted, and even students who have broken the honor code are generally treated fairly, especially when they admit to the their infractions. By no means would I say the CNU honor code is perfect, but I don’t believe you can expect it to be. However, it is something to build on and i think it does indeed play a major role at CNU.

I believe that the CNU Honor Code is merely a reminder to everyone that as a human being, they should be truthful and, well, honest. The Code is important because it does hold people responsible if they were to mess up. Basically, however, it comes down to each individual student and how much integrity they have. People should not be worried about the consequences of breaking the Honor Code, they should just follow it because its the right thing to do. The code does deter some who may not otherwise be above cheating which is always a good thing. Overall, the Honor Code is a good guideline and reminder for everyone. It is also good because it has created a rather trustworthy community on campus and among students and faculty.

As a faculty member, I trust the honor code. As mentioned above, a student must possess a small amount of integrity to even make it to the college level. The honor code primarily makes sure they uphold that integrity. I do think the honor code ceremony is crucial for the honor code message to be successful. I do not understand why the freshmen are the only ones who partake in it? I think it needs to be reemphasized on a yearly basis. I think it is a wonderful communication tool for both faculty and students so they both understand the expectations of the University.

The honor code provides guidance for students and faculty in the learning process. As a faculty members we play the important role of assessing our students learning and understanding. The honor code provides the foundation for this process. Without it, the integrity of pedagogy would be in serious jeopardy and would undermine everything that higher education represents both inside and outside of the classroom.
