CNU’s Community of Honor

CNU often uses the phrase “Community of Honor” when describing the campus environment. I remember President Trible outlining his expectation of this when I was a freshman recruit to the school. The President said he expected that if a student saw a $20 bill on the ground that they would leave it there until the rightful owner came back and picked it up. Trible, in usual fashion, made an impressive point and awed the audience. I think that a community of honor is essentially what the President’s vision was: a safe environment where we can trust our fellow classmates to do the right thing. The emphasis placed on the Honor Code has helped this process along, but I worry we might become over saturated by the idea of “Communities of Honor” and have it lose its meaning to us.

My Two Cents – CNU’s Honor Code

CNU’s honor code is only good in theory. Actually getting students and staff to comply to the honor code is strictly voluntary it seems. To tell someone not to lie, cheat or steal will only register with select people who already had those moral and ethical views in the first place. The practice of honor and getting others to abide by the standards of honor that CNU has set up is the more difficult task. Students will find their way around the honor code in anyway possible if they want to lie, cheat or steal. If a person has the conviction to do something unsavory to get ahead in life they usually won’t let codes of honor of even the law get in their way. These views are not necessarily a positive view of the situation CNU’s honor code is facing but they are realistic in a sense. The honor code seems like it was initiated to make CNU look better on paper but there is no real way to measure the honor being practiced by the students and staff of CNU. Because honor can’t be readily measured in a practical sense, how do we know the honor code is being properly instilled in the CNU community? The only way we know if the honor code is working is by singling out those who have broken the code. Even if that is done, we still don’t know if the other part of the community is practicing the honor code or are evasive enough not to get caught? All of these questions and more need to be analyzed to determine if the honor code really means anything to the CNU community or if it is just a way for CNU to look better to external researchers.

Honor code

I think that the Christopher Newport University honor code is very beneficial to the students because it portrays the ethical standards of the professional business world. The honor code is basically stating that students should be ethical in their schooling by not cheating, plagurizing, etc., which will help us to learn the ethics of the business world because we are getting the honor code engraved in our heads each time we look at a syllabus, have a test, or talk about ethics in our business classes. This way, we will be prepared for the “real world” when we graduate because we will be aware of what our employers and office atmosphere will be like. We have learned that you have to be ethical in order to do well for yourself in life and in general.

Integrity

I think that the Honor Code is a valuable tool on CNU’s campus. However, I also feel that there is a divide among the school; those that take the honor code seriously and those who do not.  I belive that students should be required to take a course on the Honor Code and integrity as a freshman at CNU.  There are many people who have been raised to have intergrity and values and there are those that know what is right and wrong but have not had to evaluate in depth what this actually means.  It is valuable for all students to consider situations so as to avoid breaking the honor code; for their sake and the CNU community.

Honor Code

Being a community of honor means a lot to me.  There are many schools that do not have an honor code.  I think that having one makes us much more responsible for our actions and an all around better community.  From the second that you set foot on campus, as a freshman or if you are just on a tour of the school, you are exposed to the honor code and how much it means to our campus.  I think the fact that is is posted in every classroom and most professors make you sign it before an exam makes the sudents really value their own work and all of the effort that they put into their education.  I think that if we did not have an honor code, less students would take pride in their work and would be more comfotable with cheating or letting someone cheat off of them.  I am proud to say that CNU has an honor code that we all live by.

Honor Code at CNU

I believe that CNU does an amazing job instilling this value into the community.  From day one at our Freshman Induction Ceremony, the honor code is read to us and imprinted into our minds.  For every class that we take, it means another syllabus with the honor code written for us to read, as well as in every classroom.  I truly believe this makes a difference on our campus in many different ways: I feel confident that if I left something in a classroom by accident, it would still be there an hour later or even the next day; I believe that cheating is certainly not an issue as it may have been in high school.  Overall, CNU is doing a great job at imprinting this value into our heads and hearts, truly impacting the students for the rest of our lives.

What it means to be a community of honor

I think the honor code and being a school/community of honor is like asking yourself how you want your community to view you.  This is accomplished by having honest, hard-working students that do not get into trouble.  The community is benefited by your presence and input.  If you strive for excellence in these categories (honestly, hard work, and being a model citizen) the community notices and it can even rub off on everyone in the community and outside as well.  I was told from when I was young to plant myself around other good people who have intentions that are similar.  The contact I had with them benefited me and kept me out of trouble so I was able to shine.  If we can all make a serious point to want to be that kind of community, we can set/continue that tradition for as long as this school/community exists.CNU Business Student

CNU Honor Code

CNU prides itself on the fact that it is a university that greatly emphasizes honor and integrity. There is a  reminder in every classroom of what CNU expects of every student with a plaque stating the CNU Honor Code. Even as a freshman, each student signs the Honor Code stating that they will uphold the standard CNU expects of us. All of these reminders of honor and integrity will help transform each of us into better men and women in the workplace but even better, in life. I believe CNU is addressing an imperative issue in our society in teaching students the honorable way to do things.

Integrity at CNU

When I first came to CNU, I saw a huge difference in the way that the Honor Code and integrity were stressed compared to my high school. I think the big difference was that everyone seemed to take it seriously here! I remember being in high school and seeing almost every student cheat at one point in their four years there. Here at CNU, I think a combination of maturity and integrity really drives students to do their own work and be proud of it. The business school especially stresses the Honor Code, with plaques on the classroom walls and having it written on the syllabus for class. I have also noticed that on the first day of classes, most business teachers do actually take the time to read the Honor Code to students, which really sets the standard for the class. During tests at CNU, many of my teachers will even leave the classroom for a little while. That could never in a million years happen in most high schools. I think that at this point in our lives, it should be no question that all students should follow the Honor Code in everything we do, and I think most of the students at CNU do just that.

CNU Honor Code…A Student Perspective

In my opinion, the CNU Honor Code is a significant part of this university.  By stressing the importance of the Honor Code to students not only when they begin at the university, but throughout their time here as well, it is making it known the impact that honor and integrity have on this community.  I feel that being a part of the honorable community at CNU is a great thing.  One problem that students may have is remembering what exactly is a violation of the Honor Code, and what are the consequences of not abiding by it.  Although students are aware of the Honor Code, they may not consider certain acts to be a violation of it.  In my opinon, there is a lot of awareness about the existence of the Honor Code, but it might be even bigger if students could learn more about what exactly the code entails.  Students may constantly see the Honor Code, and dismiss it because they feel that many things are not a violation, when they really are.  Educating the students on the various violations may help to promote the Honor Code even more within the Luter College.

CNU HONOR CODE

In my time here at CNU, I feel that the honor code has truly been a community of honor.  To me living in this community of honor has lead to security, but also let downs.  In the sense of security I reference my years living on campus. I think actually shut and locked my door maybe 10 times and that was only because I was leaving for the weekend.  The let downs that I felt was when I had my bike stolen freshman year.  The theft of it and the fact that it was never found by me or the CNU PD lead me to be a little bit more careful but I still felt that anything in my dorm was safe.  To me the main concept if never lie, cheat, or steal is a basic concept that I grew up being taught and is second nature.  I feel that this honor code and the fact that we have to sign it curbs anyones desire to do so for the fear of being caught.

Integrity at CNU

CNU has really been a community of honor over the years for me.  For me that has meant being able to not worry.  Freshman year I may have locked my door 3 times the entire year, when I was gone, when I was asleep, it was always open.  If my friends needed me or something from me it was always available to them.  It is the feeling that everything I own can be sitting there for the taking and my things will never go missing.  That even though I left it in front of hundreds of strangers it never felt that way.  Following a system of honor on campus, around campus, and in society in general is vital to society functioning normally.  It goes beyond “do not lie, cheat, or steal”, it is a sort of social code that can lead everyone to be comfortable no matter where they are.  To me that is the only purpose of an honor code, to reinforce the building of that feeling and that community.

CNU’s Honor Code

I still remember signing the CNU honor code as a freshmen, but as the days pass by from that moment, the honor code has seem to diminish. The honor code may be everywhere, such as on exams and on the walls in class rooms, but they seem to be rarely enforced through repetition. I believe the honor code was created to place integrity into the minds of students, but the pressure of academics may be too much.  The pressure to succeed and to get high grades can generate the thought of cheating in the minds of students. The honor code can be set back in order to achieve high marks in classrooms through the acts of cheating. The moral compass of students may be skewed from time to time by the pressure of academic success, but also from time to time the honor code helps direct the compass towards the right path.

An Honorable Community

The Honor code, “on my honor, I will maintain the highest standards of honesty, integrity and personal responsibility.  This means I will not lie, cheat, or steal, and as a member of this academic community, I am committed to creating and environment of respect and mutual trust.”  I feel this honor code has made my four years at CNU a lot more enjoyable.  It is nice to know that when you are on the CNU campus you can leave something and come back to find it still there.  In the classroom, I feel the honor code has also greatly benefitted me.   Knowing that my peers are not cheating, or at least a large percentage is not, makes it easier for one to focus on their own work knowing that nobody is going to cheat their way to a better grade than you.  I also feel that the CNU honor code has raised a lot of people’s standards from high school.  Multiple times I have heard fellow classmates say that they cheated in high school, but they have not at college.  This is good to hear because it shows that students are not only learning knowledge in the classroom, but honor and integrity as well.

CNU’s Honor Code

Here at CNU the Honor Code is a major part of the university, you hear about it from the first day you move in all the way until you graduate.   The  reoccuring theme of the Honor Code throughout the university on walls in every classroom, on blue books, and tests given out by professors that CNU is an extremely honorable place and expects its students and staff to be just as honorable if not more.  This idea of a honorable place with honorable people is completely fine and good however CNU’s Honor Code can sometimes cross boundaries and go a little too far.  For example I have an instance when a student got into minor trouble with the Newport News City Police, the university got word of this and the student ended up getting a honor code violation.  This is a bit out of control the student was nowhere near the campus and the only thing in the whole incidence that had to do with CNU is the he/she was a student there.  With this said the CNU Honor Code is an important entity of the school and should stand as the foundation however it should only be the foundation for CNU and what a student does at CNU not what they do outside of the campus.

Honor Code

The most memorable part of my college experience has been making the promise of honor at convocation my freshman year of college. I remember walking down the ailse and signing my name to pledge my honor to the community of Christopher Newport University. Christopher Newport has gained respect throughout the country for its high standards and excellence in the community. The environment at CNU requires one to be honest and truthful to be successful in life. As students it is our duty to the entire school that protect our own thoughts and work. I have been taught this lesson that will remain with me the rest of my life. Integrity is an important part of Christopher Newport and in order to remain a high standard school we must uphold our duty of honor.

The Honor Code of CNU

CNU’s Honor Code is a key component to the success of this University. The Honor Code promotes a community of honor, trust, integrity, and responsibility. CNU takes such pride in the code that it requires every single Freshman to sign it at Convocation before the first week of school. There are plaques in all the classrooms on campus and every syllabus that is handed out has the Honor Code printed. As students, we are constantly reminded of the honorable environment which we learn in. CNU students take an active participation in the Honor Code because they value the academic society they learn in. Without the Honor Code in place there would be no academic spirit that every CNU student shows on a daily basis. Thus the Honor Code is essential to the future growth of CNU and the growth of integrity and responsibility within every CNU student.

CNU’s Honor Code

When I think of the honor code at CNU, I think of it as a guideline to building and individuals integrity. While I believe in following it to the word and feel that there is no room for the “what ifs” I feel like it has become a second thought or even third. When we come in as freshman it is first introduced to us, but after that where is it? Yes I see it on doors and sometimes on the cover page of an exam but why has the talk of honesty faded. At the beginning we are asked to sign the honor code and it is supposed to become a  vital corner-stone to what CNU students stand for.  But as a freshman, do we even know what it means to have honor and integrity? If it so important to the university to have us sign a contract, stating that we will adhere to the rules and regulations, then why is it not pursued any further. College is entirely about education and experiences, but when it comes to one of the most important values a person can posses, a value that can actually be taught to us, it is forgotten about.

CNU Business Student

Where do we learn ethics?

CNU does a great job explaining how important being ethical is and why it is important to have honor through the ethics classes they offer and by posting the honor code on plaques in every class room. I feel that even with these efforts CNU can show the importance of being ethical, but can never change a person and the choices that they make whether they are ethical or not. I am a strong believer in good ethics and think that is important to have and practice, which is something I learned long before I came to CNU. It is important to show that CNU cares about honor and ethics, but students that come to the university have already made up their minds about whether they want to be ethical or not.

Integrity at CNU

I feel that the Honor Code is stressed a lot at CNU…in classes, on syllabuses, plaques on the wall, and now on the back of our student ids. Students see it everywhere.  During my four years at CNU, it seems that it is stressed more in the business classes that I’ve taken than classes in other departments. That could be because I’ve had more classes in the business department than in others but that has been the trend I’ve seen thus far. Not to say that the other classes haven’t mentioned it, just that Professors in the Business School seem to stress it more upon students. The Honor Code has a visual presence around us all, which is a good reminder to each student and everyone should be aware of it. However, integrity and honor is a characteristic and a personal choice that each student must make for themselves on a daily basis. Each exam you take and homework assignment you do requires you to make a choice to do it on your own with integrity.
